Boston Ballet’s Nutcracker

Christmas Eve, 2023

My last post was about attending the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. In it, I talked about how after the parade we enjoyed a great meal at our favorite Brazilian Steakhouse, Fogo de Chao in New York. It got me thinking about other times that we have had a great meal at Fogo, and here’s my most recent trip there. It seems like each time we eat at a Fogo, it’s the perfect ending to a fantastic day.

This past Christmas, we didn’t travel to see family, and we didn’t entertain any family either. We had the entire holiday to ourselves. Christmas is such a special time of the year, and we wanted to create some good Christmas memories. I had looked into checking out performances of either the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall, or the Boston Ballet’s Nutcracker at the Boston Opera House. We haven’t been to either. Looking at last minute ticket availability, we decided on the Nutcracker.

The Boston Opera House is a gorgeous venue. Opened 95 years ago, and receiving a major renovation in 2004. Pictures don’t do the place justice, and there isn’t a bad seat in the house.

…and that’s good, because we bought our tickets in the very last row of the balcony. The view surpassed my expectations, and the best part, the tickets in the last row or two are only $25 each! If you’ve got a family and want to create a holiday tradition on a budget, there’s really no better thing to do!

Photos and video aren’t allowed to be taken of the production, and while I did sneak a few quick video clips (being in the last row helped, LOL), I’m not going to post them here out of respect for their policies. I wish I could, because they would definitely dispel any hesitation that one might have about purchasing the $25 seats.

Purchasing pre-paid parking through SpotHero was very easy. There’s a great lot right across the street at the Lafayette Center Garage that offers great deals on parking for the duration of the show, plus an hour or two on each end just in case you’d like to wander around.

On to Fogo!

We’ve eaten at the Fogo de Chao in Boston but decided to hit up the location at the Burlington Mall instead. This was mainly due to the fact that my wife had just come out of a cast on her leg and we didn’t want to have to walk several blocks more than necessary. As usual, the meal was fantastic.

One of my favorites is Picanha. If you’d like to make it at home, it is a tough cut to find, and I recommend talking to a butcher. It is very possible to purchase an entire top sirloin roast and cut off the cap, and often times I find it on sale. I will be posting soon on how to make it, along with some of my other favorite cuts of meat. It’s the perfect texture, salty flavor, and fat cap that makes it truly outstanding.

The best part of this Christmas Eve adventure was that we were able to make it home in plenty of time to get to bed for Santa to arrive!
